The Veiled Path is an underground railroad that operated since at least 1975.

The "Veil" is a metaphor for the secrecy surrounding helping runaway slaves traveling from the Shangon Empire in the west to the Freelands Republic in the east. During the Bloodstone War, while slavery was still legal, the Veiled Path was loosely allied with the Freelands Republic.

The Veiled Path isn't a sophisticated organization. It has one goal: helping slaves escape from the Empire and get lost in the Freelands. It has no centralized leadership, and there's a strong emphasis on limiting how much the keeper(s) of any one waystation know.

In the slang of the Veiled Path, a "chainbreaker" is someone who frees slaves, often by force.

Riverfast in the Neutral Zone was used as one of many secret waystations on Path. The underground fort was cursed by the Imperial Army during the war.
