OOC

You can use wheels to work on a variety of projects during "downtime." We use Slippage to hand-wave when wheels happen.

d20s

You get two d20s to roll each week. You can spend one or both on projects. You always get two d20s each week. You can bank them if you don't have a wheel in mind. If you're absent, your d20s are automatically banked.

The team gets one d20 each week. It can be used for any PC's wheel. If the team can't agree, they vote. This d20 can't be banked.

One of the best reasons for completing a wheel is being able to say that you completed it. Depending on the nature of the wheel, you may be able to successfully assert to the DM that your PC deserves a particular story-related benefit, access to new contacts/locations/resources, or something similar.

Starting a Wheel

The best way to start a wheel is posting it in #wheels-and-requests in Discord. Please include the skill you think is most appropriate. You can also start a wheel during the launch sequence in most episodes.

I track progress on your projects using wheels. I set the length of a wheel and you can see it. See: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1nB0Uhkubnz7XvOdXSM6evrY7Hzzpd02G3IB7hL71cxk/edit?usp=sharing

Progress

Your progress depends on your roll:

  • n1: No progress
  • Failure: 1 tick
  • Success: 2 ticks
  • n20: 3 ticks

After rolling a Weekly d20, you can spend 1 SP to use the Reroll Ability Check gambit.

Possible Projects

Some possible projects include:

  • Contacts: Develop connections with beings and/or factions outside the team.
  • Crafting: Make stuff. The stuff can be mundane and/or magical. This project can include crafting a variation of a spell. Invention and prototyping may first require Research.
  • Help: Spend a Weekly d20 to give another PC advantage on their project.
  • R&D (Research & Development): Learn more about something (e.g., person, place, object, phenomenon). This project may include scholarly research, lab work, and/or fieldwork.
  • Resources: Accumulate money, weapons, armor, gear, real estate, vehicles, etc.
  • Spiritual: Deepen your connection to the subtleties of the multiverse, based on your paradigm. This project may include participating in religious services, doing charity/volunteer work, prayer, meditation, etc.
  • Synergy: Practice working together with at least one other being (PC or NPC). If that being is a PC, they must also spend a Weekly d20. Both d20s are rolled and can add ticks.
  • Training: Maintain current abilities and/or develop new ones.

Mechanical Projects

Some projects can have mechanical effects for your PC. A wheel usually can't unlock a class feature early, or unlock a feature from another class or subclass.

Here are some example mechanical projects.

Wheel Skill Target Steps Notes
Feat Unbound 18 36 For this kind of wheel, you can start a maximum total of 1 before Level 9, and a maximum total of 2 before Level 17.
Language Unbound 18 36
Skill, Improve by +1 [Skill] 15 24 You must already be proficient. For a particular skill, you can start a maximum total of 1 wheels before Level 9, and a maximum total of 2 wheels before Level 17.
Spell, Existing Arcana 15 6 Target and Steps are the same for any spell level
Spell, Original Arcana, Nature, or Religion 15 18 Target and Steps are the same for any spell level
Swift Agility Acrobatics, Athletics, Arcana, Nature, Religion, Stealth, or Survival 15 12 +/-1 on the Swift Hunter table. You can complete this wheel up to three times, for a maximum of +/-3.
Tool Proficiency Unbound 18 36

Note: Xanathar's (p. 134) recommends this for languages and tool proficiencies: "Receiving training in a language or tool typically takes at least ten workweeks, but this time is reduced by a number of workweeks equal to the character's Intelligence modifier (an Intelligence penalty doesn't increase the time needed)."
