Velofin Skimmer

Species

The Velofin Skimmer is a larger, amphibious creature, about the size of a small dog. It has cunning, agility, and extraordinary speed both on land and in water.

Anatomy

• Head: The Velofin Skimmer has a wedge-shaped head with wide-set, golden, reflective eyes that provide excellent night vision. A split, prehensile tongue flicks out to taste the air and sense prey.
• Body: It's about 2.5 feet long (with another 1.5 feet of tail). It has a slender, streamlined torso covered in smooth, semi-glossy skin that shifts between emerald green, obsidian black, and vibrant turquoise for camouflage. Its body narrows into a powerful tail tipped with a flexible fin used for sharp turns in water.
• Legs: Its muscular, long hind legs have webbed, clawed feet, ideal for powerful leaps on land and swift swimming strokes underwater. The shorter, sturdy forelegs provide balance and are used for digging or grappling prey.
• Fins: Two retractable, fin-like flaps along its spine stabilize it in water and aid in gliding across slick surfaces.

Behavior

The Velofin Skimmer is a highly territorial and intelligent ambush predator. It patrols a small range of jungle streams, mangrove roots, or shallow riverbeds, where it stalks fish, amphibians, and small mammals. Its quick bursts of motion and unmatched agility allow it to surprise even the most alert prey. Special Abilities:

• Hydro-Sprint: Using its strong hind legs and tail, the Velofin Skimmer can "run" across the water's surface for several seconds.
• Snap Leap: On land, it can leap nearly 15 feet in a single bound. In the process, its hind legs make a distinct snapping sound from a kind of biological hydraulic spring system.
• Sonic Ripple: When threatened, it slaps its tail against the water, creating a soundwave that stuns nearby small creatures and startles larger predators.

Habitat

The Velofin Skimmer is typically found in dense jungle wetlands, thriving in areas with a mix of shallow water and dry patches for hunting and resting. It builds small burrows near water edges, lined with smooth stones and plant fibers.
