By 2013, the Shangon Empire and the Freelands Republic found themselves economically exhausted. Two generations of their young people largely injured or dead. Their lands were devastated by bloodstone ruptures, by rogue spellcasters crazed and mutated by Strain, and by all the many mundane evils of war. Their wildernesses and trade routes were beset by unpredictable graven hulks. The widespread spiritual crisis of the Blood Debt was the final straw, and a truce was negotiated.
