A soul stone is a bloodstone that has been cleansed of necromantic energy. The soul remains imprisoned. But it no longer experiences perpetual suffering, nor can it be tapped for arcane stamina. If the soul stone is destroyed, the soul goes free and passes to the afterlife. Thus, resurrection or reincarnation becomes possible.
The spell to purify a bloodstone is a closely-guarded secret, since it's a variant on the spell to create a bloodstone. The spell is known to some followers of Hades. It's very taxing. ((The caster spends a 3rd level slot plus Channel Divinity, and gains 3 levels of Exhaustion.))
