Party: Jane Irwin (Cael), Cyrus Riggs (Sielic), Cadeos (DragoN), Haelra Vayn (Basil)
Absent: Lyndi Fletcher (Aslene) (preparing for the hearing), Proud Flame (Aunne) (on a separate mission for Nails)

In the middle of the night, some Raptors are awakened by Lex and Brother Iron. The fae and druid ask the heroes to investigate a trespass in an abandoned, secret lab. In the lab, the heroes defeat several elemental myrmidons. They also meet Sarii Hornwood, a goblin tynker from Sigil.

A Late Night Request

  • This episode takes place after RB 3-17: Strategic Update & Escorting Olbenym but before RB 4-1: Petitioning the Council
  • The team escorted Olbenym to Washington, DC on Wed, Jan 3
  • The returned from DC via Bron
  • Draco wakes Jane, Cyrus, Cadeos, and Haelra, via the Chain
  • Met by Brother Iron and Lex in common room; they need a favor
  • Jane Irwin: Jane starts to get her boots on. Stygi chirrups at Brother Iron happily.
  • Cadeos: wipes his face with a towel and reshuffles his robes a little, getting them into place
  • Lex explains
  • Project Stratonix
    • An old Rational Ascendancy project:
    • 1943, during World War II
    • Intense air war, both Europe and the Pacific
    • RA built a Turing machine in a secret lab under Lake Michigan
    • It was designed to predict the weather
    • The power source was experimental elemental batteries, that is, elementals trapped in batteries
  • In December 13, 1944, there was an explosion which wiped out the lab
  • Jane Irwin: Jane tries to school her features into neutrality, but kind of fails. Freaking figures.
  • Jane Irwin: in the Chain: God fucking bless.
  • The lab wasn't destroyed
    • The Order of One Terra and the Winter Court learned that the project was secretly using the Axis of Elusive Truths
    • They were using the Axis to imprison elementals and enslave them in an attempt to predict, influence, or even control the weather
    • One Terra and the Court collaborated to secretly relocate the lab, under the cover an explosion
    • We freed the elementals and destroyed the research
    • The lab's been kept sealed and guarded ever since
  • However, someone has teleported into in the lab
  • They shouldn't have been able to do that, because of fairy and druid magic
  • Lex loans the team small metal Whistles of Teleportation keyed to the lab
  • The team gears up and prepares to teleport into the lab
  • Haelra Vayn: Haelra has a flask full of the blackest tea ever created on earth that smells terrible but she drinks casually

The Lab Under the Lake

  • DM: > Lab is musty and moldy. Ceiling leaks
  • DM: > Recessed lights are on and humming
  • DM: > Perimeter magic is still active
  • DM: > Runes are powerful Conjuration and Divination
  • DM: > Cy cautions team to protect whistles
  • The team starts carefully sweeping the lab
  • They get strange readings from their various Unbound senses
  • DM: > Fae have been monitoring lab. Last visit: Sep 2017
  • DM: > Stygi says conference room smells like old mud
  • The team finds a large stone humanoid inert on a conference table
  • DM: > Water elemental myrmidon smashes open the doors and attacks (alerted by Draco bashing a chunk of wall out, accidentally)
  • During the fight, Jane summons two giant octopuses
  • The heroes notice a small, invisible creature, which turns out to be a robot
  • DM: > Elemental was in a state of half-life, and Haelra's spell liberated it from the Prime
  • The heroes question the robot
  • The robot is Sarii Hornwood, Free League tynker
  • Female goblin artificer
  • Sarii's Story
    • Tynker from Sigil
    • "I discovered the Hornwood Equation. I'm kinda a big deal."
    • "My team and I used the Axis of Elusive Truths to project my consciousness into this lab, plus a robot body."
    • "We're trying to find a viable vertex through the Maelstrom."
    • "We needed more calculating power."
    • "You people are really good at building calculators."
    • "I was copying the designs to build a duplicate in Sigil."
    • "I couldn't figure out how part of the calculator worked, so I turned it on and tried running some calculations. I think, uh, I think when I turned it on, that reactivated some of the guards."
  • "So, I, uh, I hid."
  • DM: > The octpus is occasionally poking the pile of mud and stone suspiciously
  • Jane Irwin: Jane, in the Chain: I kinda think we should help her. If she's trying to fix what's fucked, well, seems mostly legit...?
  • The team decides to clear out the remaining elemental myrmidons and help Sarii
  • Much of the lab is abandoned
  • They find two myrmidons in the main lab space, in front of the Turing machine
  • DM: > Water myrmidon half-way up the wall, using its trident to bash a hole through the ceiling
  • DM: > Earth myrmidon is just smashing things in anger
  • Sarii mutters. "The calculator didn't even work. I think the batteries are dead."
  • DM: > Myrmidons may be proto-adintech: necromancy used to trap the elementals in physical shells on the Prime
  • The team, including the giant octopuses, fights the myrmidons
  • Cyrus first fights as a giant ape
  • The team triumphs
  • The elementals seem grateful to be released
  • Sarii: > Finishes her notes on the calculator
  • Sarii: > Recommends visiting the Temple of Corellon Larethian if you're searching for shrine space
  • Sarii departs, taking her robot body with her
  • The team finishes their sweep of the lab and teleports back to the Fort
