A nanotox system is a nanite and toxin screen, designed to defend against hostile nanites and biological and chemical toxins. A typical nanotox system includes a surgical implant under the left arm, against the rib cage. The implant coordinates several defensive functions. It releases and maintains sensor nanites and hunter-killer nanites. The sensor nanites monitor concentrations of toxins in the circulatory system and dispatch the hunter-killers to hot spots. The implant can collect, concentrate, and package toxins, sending them into the bowels as harmless, microscopic waste. Unfortunately, the implant can't dispose of toxins quickly enough to neutralize a deliberate biochemical threat. It compensates by enhancing and repairing the endocrine system, and coordinates a full upgrade of the kidneys and liver to cybernetic organs. Like most such upgrades, this requires a supply of metametal, which can be injected near the implant or ingested. The implant can operate indefinitely using the host's metabolism, although it has higher tolerances and efficiency when the host regularly consumes metametal. It has maximum tolerances and efficiency as part of a Personal Cybernetic System (PCS).

Nanotox screens are rated based on their general effectiveness against known threats, on a scale of 1 (minimal protection) to 10+ (maximum protection).
