The Final Race (author unknown)
The Final Race, or The Ultimate Contest, is a famous transplanar contest that happened hundreds or perhaps thousands of years ago. (The name is sometimes translated as the Supreme Race.)
Most accounts of the race agree with its origins. Many gods attending the death of a god. (No one knows which god it was because the god is dead.) The gods fell to arguing about who's chosen one would win in a race. They set a course so challenging that it would be never be surpassed.
There were checkpoints throughout the Inner Planes, Ethereal Plane, Prime worlds, Astral Plane, and Outer Planes.
Some accounts say that the race happened and the results were recorded on a tablet. The tablet holds some of the power of all the gods who participated. Some say the race was only a thought experiment, with each god contributing a rune to the tablet. Some say it was somehow both these things: a real race and a thought experiment.
Some accounts say there was an argument. Some say the tablet was stolen. Some say it was broken.
Some accounts say that dust from the tablet was cast across the multiverse. The dust got into the blood of some families, and passed down through generations. Those with dust in their blood have special gifts.
Some accounts describe a prophecy of reuniting the pieces. The tablet, made whole, would grant extraordinary power: to be instantly anywhere in the multiverse. Some accounts say that the tablet would grant the ultimate power for winning a race: time travel, to win the race before it begins.
