A paradigm is a being’s perspective about the world, especially the existence of magical beings and phenomena. There can be as many paradigms as there are sentient beings. Even two beings who share the same beliefs will probably have at least slightly different perspectives. However, most paradigms can be crudely lumped into these categories:

  • Arcanist: You’ve learned the secrets of manipulating the hidden forces of reality (e.g., via special implements and materials, via a secret language).
  • Cyborg: Your body has been surgically implanted with futuristic enhancements or replacements. See: Technomancy
  • Gadgeteer: You’re a genius at inventing devices that harness magic. See: Technomancy
  • Marauder: You aren’t from Earth. Magic is common on your home planet or dimension.
  • Mutant: You have paranormal DNA, either from birth or an event (e.g., via radiation).
  • Psychic: You’ve unlocked mental abilities (e.g., via a secret process of meditation).
  • Servant of a Higher Power: Magic is a gift from higher power (e.g., God, a demigod, a demon).

Paradigms are relevant to Unbound, and especially to Unbound who cast spells. If the magician's paradigm and the dominant local paradigm are significantly different, the local paradigm will resist the magician's efforts to change reality. This resistance by the world is called Clash.

Paradigms are closely related to Source. Unbound beings' beliefs about where their powers come from and what sustains those powers are a reflection of their larger paradigm.
