Grimstone is a duergar kingdom in the Shadowfell, co-terminus with Chicago.
Max: The Shadowfell is an echo plane: a world co-terminus with ours, but separated by a magical barrier. It's an alternate dimension, just like the Feywild. There are competing theories on which direction influence flows: Prime to echo plane, echo to Prime, or both. In Grimstone's case, there are obvious parallels. For example, prior to losing contact around the turn of the century (1900), we knew that Grimstone had rapidly grown into a castle-factory of enormous size and operations--just as Chicago was rapidly growing into an industrial and commercial metropolis. ... Apparently Grimstone regularly sent observers to Rational Ascendancy councils, hearings, and other events, before the Breakwater cut off planar travel.
The duergar, or gray dwarves, are generally seen as dour, fatalistic metahumans with little loyalty to any principle or being other than their own people, clan, and fortress. They prefer to live underground or in sunless lands, like the Shadowfell. Duergar have considerable innate magical powers, and a higher proportion of them become Unbound.
