There are multiple approaches to necromancy. They are primarily distinguished by whether the magic affects a soul, a body, or both, and by whether the necromancer is imposing their will or making a request.

• “Blood necromancy,” “flesh-and-blood necromancy,” and “mud necromancy” are slang for magic that focuses on bodies.
• “Spectral necromancy” is slang for magic that focuses on souls.
• “Hardline necromancy” is slang for magic that forces a soul or body to obey.
  • Some practitioners call themselves "hardliners."
  • This approach is far more popular. It’s the kind of necromancy that gives necromancers their grim reputation.
• “Whispered necromancy” is slang for magic that asks a soul or body for cooperation.
  • Historically, this approach has been called “white necromancy.” However, that use is falling out of favor due to the racially-problematic metaphor that “white is good, black is bad.”
  • Followers of the Lady of the Second Chance sometimes call this “pink necromancy.”
  • Hardliner may have originated “Whisperer” as an insult, but many whisperers have claimed the label as point of pride.
