The Brotherhood of the Better Book is a fraternal order of explorers, archaeologists, and field scientists. It was founded by adventurous dwarven followers of the dwarven gods Dugmaren Brightmantle and Marthammor Duin (aka Muamman Duathal). However, the Brotherhood welcomes members from all races, genders, and worlds. Members don't need to revere or worship the order's divine patrons. Members are generally law-abiding and civic-minded. If they survive their many adventures, members often semi-retire as sages, tutors, authors, or even civic leaders.
Members pay dues to their order's local chapter. A chapter might be based in a library, college, remote waystation, lighthouse, shop of curiosities, or any place that welcomes and supports travelers. Dues are highly negotiable: they can be paid in money, goods, maintenance of the chapter's property, lore, or unusual objects, pending the chapter master's approval.
The order's symbol is a book circled by an unfinished path.
The order's name comes from a children's story about Dugmaren and Marthammor having a bet to find all the "cool" books in the multiverse. Each time one finds a book and shows it to the other god, that god teases, "Ah, yes brother, that is a good book. But I bet I can find a better book."

The Brotherhood of the Book has long-standing relationships with many like-minded organizations. For example, Goldwood Spires frequently contracts with the Brotherhood for hard-to-find books.
