Elias Rossman was one of the most influential paranormal beings of the 20th Century. In collaboration with Dwight Mackey, Rossman pioneered work on the Mosaic paradigm of transplanar exploration. Rossman and Mackey used a scientific paradigm to link to spheres, other planets, and other dimensions. Rossman used his discoveries and power to attract a group of followers, forming the original Lazarus Society.

Rossman's motives and activities were often immoral. On one of the many occasions he broke the law, he attracted a team of paranormal investigators. These investigators eventually became the Astral Team, and battled Rossman and his followers for several years. Astral Team helped found the Phoenix Group to thwart beings like Rossman and factions like the Lazarus Society.

Rossman was a difficult opponent because he used cloning to be active in several bodies at once. A special batch of Weaver Symbiote, known as Batch 071, was used to kill Rossman.

Assemblers were created when the Reaver Combine assimilated several clones of Rossman.
