Whenever you cast a spell, you can try to invoke a Law of Magic. If you're successful, you receive 1 boost to the spell. See: Laws of Magic

You can spend 1 boost for 1 of the following choices:

  • (A) Resolve the spell as if you used a spell slot of 1 higher level (e.g., a wizard casts Magic Missile with a 1st level slot but still gets an extra dart).
  • (B) Resolve the spell as if your class level was 1 higher (e.g., a level 4 wizard casts Fire Bolt as if they're level 5 and thus does more damage).
  • (C) For a spell that requires an attack roll, you gain a +1 bonus. When you reach 10th level, this bonus increases to +2.
  • (D) For a spell that requires a saving throw, you gain a +1 bonus to your spell DC. When you reach 10th level, this bonus increases to +2.

You can spend multiple boosts on the same choice. For example, you can spend 2 boosts on (C) for a greater bonus. If you're already using a spell slot of a higher level, you can use still choose (A).

My goals with these rules are to give casters the option to include more storytelling and thematic flavor, without an unreasonable burden or slow-down in play.
