Magic; OOC

From 2018-2023, we used Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition for Edgewar. This page is from that era.

Source Points (SP) replace Inspiration. The team shares a pool of SP, with a maximum of 10. PCs can claim and spend SP in several ways. Whenever any PC gains or spends SP, use the team's pool.

Source Points represent the team's individual and collective connections to their Sources.

Gaining SP

As a player, you are responsible for noticing when your PC should claim one SP and speaking up. The DM decides whether the SP is claimed.

A player can claim SP when they finish particular behaviors, IC or OOC. The list include any behavior that:

  • Matches your Flair &/or fulfills your Groove
  • Honors your Ideal
  • Would earn Piety with your god
  • Another PC praises (e.g., a deft tactical maneuver)
  • Another player praises (e.g., table building)

As a player, you may see additional behaviors that are worthy of claiming SP. You're encouraged to ask the DM if they agree.

Flair and Groove

Your Flair is your personal style, which could be an adventurer archetype that you lean into. Your Groove is your distinct contribution to the team, which might be in exploration, combat, or social encounters.

An Unbound's Flair and Groove are closely tied to their Source.

Examples

From fiction:

  • Han Solo: "I am a cocky smuggler, and I will defy the odds by making bold moves in combat."
  • Black Widow: "I am a sly super spy, and I will mislead and disorient our enemies using tricks."
  • Spock: "I am a brilliant scientist, and I will find solutions using tireless, cold logic."

Past or present Edgewar PCs:

  • "I am a terrifying otherworldly presence, and I will get in our enemies' faces using Reckless Attack."
  • "I am a cunning gadgeteer, and I will maintain situational awareness using my custom gear."
  • "I am a merciful optimist, and I will defend my comrades using my Protection fighting style."
  • "I am a resourceful arcanist, and I will overcome obstacles using my utility spells."

Spending SP

As a player, you are responsible for suggesting when your PC should spend one SP and speaking up. The team decides whether the SP is spent.

A PC can spend one SP for one of the following instant effects:

  • Recharge one use of a feature as if you had completed a short or long rest, or regain one highest spell slot.
  • Reduce the Exhausted condition (once per SP).
  • Relocate by projecting or shifting across the Curb between the Grid and the Swift.
  • Reroll one roll you just made. You must accept the new result. The roll may include one or more dice (e.g., a damage roll). The roll can be part of a wheel. You can't use this more than once on the same roll.

As a player, you may see additional uses for SP. You're free to ask the DM if they agree.
