This is playtest material. I may remove it.
Until now, I've been assuming a caster is using a spell focus for any material component. Moving forward, when you use a focus, please describe it.
If a spell description includes a material component that's destroyed (e.g., Resurrection), you must use that component and it's destroyed.
You can boost spells using material components and Laws of Magic. When you cast a spell that includes a material component, you can use that component to receive 1 boost to the spell. The component is destroyed (regardless of what the spell description specifies). In addition or instead, you can try to invoke a Law of Magic. If you're successful, you receive 1 boost to the spell. See: Laws of Magic
You can spend 1 boost for 1 of the following choices:
- (A) Resolve the spell as if you used a spell slot of 1 higher level (e.g., a wizard casts Magic Missile with a 1st level slot but still gets an extra dart).
- (B) Resolve the spell as if your class level was 1 higher (e.g., a level 4 wizard casts Fire Bolt as if they're level 5 and thus does more damage).
- (C) For a spell that requires an attack roll, you gain a +1 bonus. When you reach 10th level, this bonus increases to +2.
- (D) For a spell that requires a saving throw, you gain a +1 bonus to your spell DC. When you reach 10th level, this bonus increases to +2.
You can spend multiple boosts on the same choice. For example, you can spend 2 boosts on (C) for a greater bonus. If you're already using a spell slot of a higher level, you can use still choose (A).
My goals with these rules are to give casters the option to include more storytelling and thematic flavor.
