Planters and [[Reavers]] are collectively called Insectoids. They are believed to be among the oldest species in the area of the multiverse that includes Earth. All Insectoids are aberrations: they are not native to the multiverse. (Many other spirits are immaterial but still native.) Nevertheless, insectoids have been active in the multiverse at least as old as dragons, giants, illithids, and aboleths. The similarities between Planters and Reavers leads some experts to assert that they evolved from the same species but diverged (similar to Homo sapiens and Neanderthals).
