Most gods respect a covenant of a shared "book" in which the names of all their agents are listed. The gods and their agents treat other agents with a minimum of professional courtesy. All know that to strike at a listed agent is to strike at their patron.
Generally, agents created or claimed by the gods can only survive and thrive by staying true to their duty.
When a name is stricken from the book, that being is no longer protected by their patron or the covenant. A rogue agent is an embarrassment to their former patron, and often a target for their old foes or rivals. (This is what happened to Gatriel when she left Tempus' service. Had she not been claimed by Dolmodeen, she likely would have perished.)
