My name is Jerry Artino.
I was born December 10, 2007.
I was 12 years old on August 3, 2020, when Chicago was closed by the US military.
Residents were first told there was something bad in the air, and they needed to stay inside.
There were rumors that the city was being invaded by aliens, but the government had made a deal to protect us.
The military first occupied the city to keep things calm while the wall was built.
They issues a list of contraband materials, which they seized. This included anything that flies, commercial explosives, heavy machinery, and other stuff.
We didn't know it then, but a Resistance was forming.
Then came the waiting.

The waiting ended with what we call it the Fall: Tue, Aug 11, 2020.
The bugs came from everywhere.
They were giant insects: some that looked like bugs from Earth, others not so much.
The Resistance fought back: bots, drones, and superheroes.
The Angel starting fighting the resistance, then stopped, then targeted the bugs. (The Raptors recognize that this was Archangel, the Farwatch airship carrier.)
(The damage from Archangel on full attack in downtown Chicago was cataclysmic.)
The Angel fell inside the city and it was swarmed by the bugs.
The Angel exploded, and this apparently caused many of the bugs to go into something like a coma.
Most of the bugs stayed asleep, and some were invisible.
Sometimes superheroes or other magic wakes the bugs up, including invisible ones who reappear when they wake up.
Sometimes that's accidental, sometimes it's on purpose.

It's been more than 3 years.
It's now January 5, 2024. (That's exactly 6 years in the future from the RA hearing on Operation Stiletto.)
The Resistance took a high school and turned it into a fortress.
Father D protects the children.
If children stay silent and stay away from the nests, they're safe, mostly.
We use smartphones to monitor satellite coverage.
When the satellites pass over, we cover ourselves with special shields that hide our body heat.
When we prove ourselves, Father D implants special tools. (Draco recognized implants they'd only imagined so far, embedded in the children's skulls.)

When I turned 13, Father D awakened a Change in me, so that I could better lead scavenger parties.
Father D told me that before the city was closed, many people had nightmares about a black pyramid.
Father D showed Jerry images of drawings that people had made of their nightmares, including pictures by people in hospitals for mental problems.
Father D implied that the deal the government made was to protect Earth from the pyramid, and that it was a bad deal.

When you get too big, they take you. (Lyndi, Jane, and Ryu will remember a child scavenger saying this, during their spirit quest to bond with Draco.)
I turned 15 in December. I was given equipment by Father D, and I set out on my own.
I've met some gangs: some roaming, some dug in at makeshift fortresses.
I found a male human trooper in advanced armor, dead from a gunshot wound to the head. It was possibly a sniper rifle or drone? The shot was through-and-through. I didn't find any ID. I looted the armor, a longsword, and some supplies.
(Under the pouches, sheaths, and weapons that Jerry added, the armor looks very similar to that worn by Vince Suganda.)
I hunkered down in a building to experiment with the sword. It produces light, and that drew the bugs. I killed one, but another captured me.
